Commonly Asked Questions about Shipping Pets

  • Is it better to send pet(s) by ground or by air?  Air is better. A few hours in the air opposed to a few days traveling by ground is much better.  Airline accidents compared to automobile accidents are drastically less, making air travel safer.
  • Where do pet(s) travel in the aircraft?  The airlines have special sections in cargo for animals where the temperature and pressure is the same as in the cabin.
  • Are pet(s) stressed from airline travel?  Pets usually curl up and go to sleep until they arrive at their destination.  It is over quickly and they are happy to be back in their owners arms.
  • What is the temperature where pet(s) travel onboard the aircraft?  The same as in the cabin.
  • Is it pressurized in the compartment where pet(s) travel?  Yes.
  • Is it dark where pet(s) are while in flight?  Yes, they usually go to sleep.
  • What sort of container will my pet be transported in? Your pet(s) need to be shipped In IATA Airline Approved travel crate.
  • Can I put bedding into the travel box?  It is best if they have something they are familiar with, such as the owner’s shirt or something with the owners scent on it. For international shipping only shredded paper is allowed.
  • Will pet(s) be given food and water prior to traveling?  It is not advisable to feed immediately prior to travel to avoid soiling their crates.  All crates have water containers that are filled at the time of dropping off your pet at the airport and refilled after transit.
  • Should pet(s) be given food and water prior to traveling?  It is best if they are not fed prior to traveling so they do not soil their crates.
  • Are there any circumstances when animals cannot fly?  Yes.  Restrictions are sometimes imposed on some airlines for the welfare of your pet when seasonal temperatures reach a minimum and maximum.  Only healthy animals can fly. The airlines have the right to refuse an overly aggressive pet.
  •  What if the flight(s) are delayed or cancelled?  While in transit, if a pet’s travel schedule has been interrupted due to delays or cancellations, the airlines hire professional pet handlers to care for your pet(s).  This is at the airlines expense.
  • How do they handle pet(s) in connection cities?  International airports are well equipped to handle all types of animals and may transfer them to specialized animal holding units on long layovers.
  • Can I go and see pet(s) if we have a long layover? No, due to security issues, you will not be able to interact at all with your pet while the airline has possession of it.
  • What is the best container to put my pet(s) in if I am carrying them in the passenger cabin?  Sherpa Pet Carrier. It can be purchased at any pet store.
  • What security issues do I need to be advised about when traveling with pet(s)?  Your pet and container may be searched at the airport.  You are required to show official proof of identification when claiming and shipping pets.
  • Are there any airlines that allow large pets to travel in the passenger cabin?  Not unless they are certified service animals.
  • How much would it cost to charter an airplane so I can travel with my pet on board with me?  Minimum $6,000.00 charge.
